Why am I fascinated?

One way to alleviate your headache is to open your mailbox and see a mysteriously large envelope. You eagerly open it and there is a cluster of gems from the Royal Crown…6 cards showing the Prince and his bride-to-be. William and Kate. My joy is boundless…my glee outshines the sun – William and Kate!!! My sweet, crazy friend Saskia in The Netherlands sent me all she could find – with a note saying, “Why you want them, I don’t know.”

Why do I care? Why do almost all my friends care? Why am I going to get up at 4:00 A.M. to watch the pageantry? For one thing, I watched his mother’s wedding and to see Diana’s child get married is a MUST!

But why did I watch Charles’ & Diana’s wedding? What drives so many of us Yanks to going to any means to acquire commemorative items? I live in Texas, for crying out loud! Perhaps it is because precisely because our founding fathers went to great lengths to make sure there would be no monarchy in the new country, so the whole show with all the pomp intrigues us because it is so – well – foreign to us! We have nothing similar here.

So, I’m looking forward to a card from a fellow Postcrosser in England who just mailed cards with the official stamp. I can’t wait!

To Prince William and his bride – may your love be true and I hope you do not follow your father’s example, but honor your mother’s.
