I think I lost a month…or two!

It’s been a while – where on earth did July and August go? I know our heat is finally supposed to move out after nearly 70 days of 100°+ temperatures! Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico are currently in the midst of record-breaking temperatures and a major drought. There is hope for at least a temporary break this week . Forecasters predict the dry weather will last a while, and even if we get a short break, the drought will hit again in the winter and our farmers and ranchers are facing the worst loss since the 1950s. This year “the heat” stopped being a joking matter around the end of June!

Exciting times for Dallas in July! The Dallas Mavericks NBA Basketball team won the NBA Championship for the first time! Germany’s own Dirk Nowitzki led the team to a wonderful victory – and I got requests from Postcrossing friends in Germany for “Dirk items.” I sent them in a special envelope – had fun with them.

Personally, I’ve struggled with more gifts from radiation. My dry mouth is now kept company by dry eyes. It’s hard to believe that the effects of radiation can take so long to surface. I used to watch those dry-eye prescription drops commercial and think, “What’s the big deal?” Sometimes you shouldn’t ask – because you may find out. It is painful and chronically irritating. I’m just a little tired of adding things to my “get used to it” bucket.

On the kitten front, Lord Gaga has moved to his new home in Austin and has a new brother, Dulce. From all accounts, he is spoiled rotten, much loved and still mischievous! His sister, Sassy, is with me and my little old lady cats are getting resigned to the fact that she’s not going anywhere. It is ironic that it’s the oldest cat (16) that now grooms the youngster and occasionally plays with her!

Drama of August was that my computer finally gave up the ghost which meant I needed to get a new one! TWO WEEKS I went without a computer at home. That makes monitoring three forums on Postcrossing.com a real challenge. It’s also the reason I’m so late with any updates to our little chat. AND it is why I combined my July and August postcards to Jugust (sent) and JuAugust (received). Lots of cards and some I would say just look and let them go by without thinking too much about them. It’s the beauty of the mail every day, there is going to be one or two that you’ll think, “The mailman must think I’m a total lunatic…”

Saw a few movies and was surprised that I really liked Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris.” Fun and makes you think – do you really think another era would have been better than now? Saw an old Richard Gere film, “Hachi” that made me cry…hard!

One of my good friend’s daughter got married in a beautiful traditional Mexican wedding ceremony. I really enjoyed the rituals – especially the lazo. A lazo is a large rosary, a ribbon or a decorated cord that is symbolically draped around the necks or shoulders of the bride and the groom. It is first placed around the groom’s neck or shoulders. It affirms their union and their commitment to always be together side-by-side. The couple wears the lasso throughout the service and at the end of the ceremony; the lasso is removed and is given to the Bride as a keepsake. I know modern “American” women may object to the concept, but I saw it as a symbol of permanent binding together. It was a really touching moment.

Wrapping it up, I hope you find something in my cards that makes you smile and perhaps laugh out loud. I know there are some that will at least make you say, “Awwwww….”

My wish is that your September is full of good times, serene moments and the special touch I hope someone brings to your life.

Smiles and laughs and hugs from Dallas,

  1. Just wrote a Postcrossing postcard to you, and found your blog on your profile. Sorry to hear about the Dry Eye, I have a mile case of that, myself.

Hope the week ahead is a good one!

  2. Lord Gaga was blessed to be with you his 1st 4 months. The whole summer flew by for me, too!
